This was the kind of day that could only happen with a rent-a-car. All along the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, there are atmospheric little red-roofed seaside towns. It would have been cumbersome to explore by bus, but with the car we could spend more time exploring.
Our first stop was a town called Zadar. We stopped to see Sea Organ, a place where the waves crash into special pipes on the coast and it makes music. We also saw a sculpture called the Sun Salutation, which is basically a huge solar panel that you can walk on. It was a great old town to explore with cute alley ways to meander with lots of little shops.
Then we drove another hour south to Sibenik which ended up being one of our favorite little towns. It was cozy and not very crowded and I think we had our best meal of Croatia here (squid ink polenta with seafood). We saw the huge St. James Cathedral which had been partially destroyed during the war but mostly restored.
Our final stop was Split. We arrived just in time to see the sun fully set in a beautiful pink sky. There are some nice ruins and palaces in Split but our main reason for going was to catch the ferry to the famous Hvar island.
