This little known archeological site, located a few hours east of Ephesus, was recommended to us as being superior in a lot of ways even to Ephesus. We decided to make a stop there on our way to Pamukkale. We arrived at about 4pm and had to park our car and take a tractor the rest of the way to the site. Although not nearly as big as Ephesus, the marble statues that were excavated there were in remarkable shape and there is a great little museum that explains a lot about the statues and the Roman empire in that part of the world. We took a walk through the grounds and saw the columned Temple of Aphrodite (from where the town gets its name). After exploring for a few hours, we got back in the car and drove a few more hours to the cotton castles of Pamukkale. All in all, Aphrodisias was a nice stopover point and it gave us a chance to see something that is a bit off the beaten path.
